  • Award-Winning Author, Matt de la Pena, to Visit

    Our fall semester is just beginning here at the Center for Children's and Young Adult Literature and we have many new and exciting things to share with you.  We wanted to let you know of an upcoming event that we are thrilled about.  On September 19, Matt de la Pena will be visiting the Knoxville area.  Matt de la Peña is the New York Times Bestselling, Newbery Medal-winning author of six young adult novels: Ball Don’t Lie, Mexican WhiteBoy, We Were Here, I Will Save You, The Living and The Hunted. He’s also the author of the critically-acclaimed picture books A Nation’s Hope: The Story of Boxing Legend Joe Louis (illustrated by Kadir Nelson) and Last Stop on Market Street (illustrated by Christian Robinson).

  • Author Adam Gidwitz to visit UTK Hodges Library

     The Center for Children’s and Young Adult Literature is delighted to welcome author Adam Gidwitz on Monday, October 19th, 2015.  Gidwitz is the best-selling author of the Grimm Trio (A Tale Dark and Grimm, In a Glass Grimmly, and The Grimm Conclusion), which represent fairy tales in a way which you have never heard before! In the first of the collection, we meet siblings Hansel and Gretel who travel from their story and into eight other classic fairy tales.  Along the way, we are told the “real” story of those witches, edible houses, and sneaky little children.

  • Edith Pattou to Speak at Blount County Library

    East book coverEdith Pattou, a Top 10 Best Book author, will speak Saturday, March 2 at the Blount County Library about her books for teens and her writing. Her most recent book, East, is currently being made into a movie.

  • Gene Yang, groundbreaking graphic novelist, to speak in Knoxville on March 4 and 5

    National Book Award nominee and Printz Award recipient to discuss the creation, merit, and educational value of graphic novels
     
    The comic book has officially grown up. If prestigious literary awards are any indication of ultimate acceptance, the comic book and its younger sister, the graphic novel, are decidedly in.  Knox County Public Library is pleased to partner with the Center for Children’s and Young Adult Literature at the University of Tennessee to present two evenings with award-winning graphic novelist, Gene Luen Yang.

    On Monday, March 4, 7 p.m., at University of Tennessee Hodges Library Auditorium, 1015 Volunteer Blvd., Yang will speak to educators about how to select comics for the classroom, and how to use comics to promote literacy, engage students, and help students think critically about media. This event is free and open to the public. Yang will be available to sign books after the talk.

    On Tuesday, March 5, 6 p.m., at the East Tennessee History Center Auditorium, 601 South Gay Street, Yang will illustrate how to make comic books, taking students through his creative process step-by-step. This workshop is free, however registration is required. Interested parties should reserve space by calling 865-215-8700 or registering online at www.knoxlib.org.
